Links Africa
is a 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization based in the Greater Washington DC Area. It was founded to support girls from
underprivileged families in Africa by providing access to quality education. The objective is to help the girls help themselves and their families.
Universal primary education by 2015 is one of the United Nation Millennium Development
Goals (MDGs). To achieve this goal, the Kenyan government declared free primary education. Millions of poor
children who were out of school particularly because of financial constraints enrolled. Unfortunately, such children drop out after primary school because they cannot afford the escalating cost of secondary education.
Hence, such poor families face the most difficulty choice of either placing food on the table or sending children to school. More often than not girls suffer the brunt of poverty as most parents prefer to send boys to school while the girls are forced to take care of their siblings, engage in other forms of child labor to supplement family income, or married off to elderly men to pay off family debt. Links Africa
strongly believes that the vicious cycle of poverty can be stopped if girls are supported to access quality education.
